Spirit of the Future: Drop Squad Alpha

Cmdr A'liyah Kaelestis Personal Log

It’s been a week since the battle on Asgrad where we cleared our names of criminal charges. I’m still settling into my new role as commander of Drop Squad Alpha aboard the Mjolnir, but things are going well. We held a memorial service for Knox Downe. It was brief, with much alcohol involved, just the way we would have wanted it. We also all got a little recreation time, part of which Baldur and I spent together.

I feel as if a chapter of my life had ended. I find myself having trouble finding words in Avan’ii or Basic to describe what has happened to us. In a nutshell (as humans says), it was a crazy, wondrous, insane, glorious ride. I’ve met interesting people and lost friends along the way. I endured a lot to save the galaxy, and I’m a better person because of it. I guess that’s what Drop Squad Alpha is all about. I hope history remembers us.

....I can make this work

So… I’ve apparently come to terms with the terrible luck that this entire team tends to collect.
I finally managed to catch the eye of that gorgeous Avanii Woman. Since landing on their planet, I have come to know more about their culture and it’s quite beautiful.

I digress, So I’m on this date, and right before I can take a sip of a beautiful vintage, Military storms the restaurant and drag me away! During the entire ordeal all I can think is “Baldur is gonna be soooooo pissed.”

In the prison, I was stripped down bare and left in what was an almost seemingly organic stone cell with a mattress. I then took some time to think about who I would want to call and how I’d manage to get out. It dawned on me. Realizing that time was short and the alliance was on its way, I began to gather a plan together and made my call.

After I had set the plan in motion, I realized that there were non-lethal rounds in my chest, and that Baldur was totally going to want them, so I winced and smiled simultaneously at the image. As I lay in my cell, discussing human anatomy to an Avanii guard, I heard the dislodging of an air-vent cover and smirked slyly.
After the disposal of the guard, A’liyah and I had to fight our way out, me grabbing my gear on the way. (And yes, I was in the buff as she opened my cell. The look on her face: Priceless)

Once back at the estate, I saw the condition of the kid and my heart sank. What had I done to lead to this? I was so confident everything would go acording to plan. I made sure that he was secure and taken care of before leaving his side. And only then did I leave upon hearing that those Italian IDIOTS had returned. I was sick of their bullshit, and mad about the condition of the kid, so I put together my rifle, certainly in the “extreme prejudice” kinda mood. As the LT and Commander Fought, I lined up my shot and took the big one in the chest, shattering his armor and taking him down.
After the fight commander had me thrown in the prison…. (THE PERSONAL ESTATE PRISON! what the fuck, who has that?!) I don’t mind though. I have a lot more to think about. A lot more than myself; for the first time in a long time…

Finally Home

Drop Squad Alpha – Season 2

With a blissful sigh, A’liyah relaxed into the warm, soapy water that filled the grand stone bathtub. She could already feel the knots in her muscles begin to unwind and worried thoughts melt away. Basking in the calming silence, the light floral scent of the soap bubbles, and the pleasurable heat of the water, A’liyah let her eyes close with another sigh. It seemed like a lifetime since she had a warm bubble bath, always having to bathe on the Excalibur, a space station, or at a training camp. She was home now, in the familiar stone tub with her favorite scented soaps: the smell of kalfuraay flowers. As she inhaled the gentle sweetness, her mind drifted back in time, the scent enticing her to remember. She recalled sitting in a small, sunlit field of kalfuraay flowers. A gentle caress on her bare arm, a soft kiss on her cheek. . . .

An abrupt knock on the door of the bathroom snapped A’liyah out of her peaceful reverie. She grumbled in annoyance.

“Yes?” A’liyah answered, trying to keep most of the irritation out of her voice.

“A’liyah?” came a familiar voice from behind the door.

The LT’s face lit up. “Oh! Layali!” she said. “Come in.”

The wooden door swung open gently, and a young Avanii girl with multi-toned red hair stepped into the bathroom. Her green and amber eyes reflected her joy as she shrieked in excitement. “Father just told me that you were here!” She closed the door, and sat on the wide ledge of the stone tub. “Why didn’t you come see your sister?”

A’liyah smiled up at her younger sister. “I’ve had a rough few days. I needed some time to relax.”

Layali’s expression grew a little more serious. “I know. I heard about the ship crash. You have to tell me everything!” She smiled playfully again. “I also heard you came here with that Commander Baldur. Are you two. . .? You know. . .” She raised her gold-red eyebrows suggestively.

“Hey! No, not at all. He’s my commanding officer. We’re teammates, but. . . .” A’liyah trailed off.

“But what?” Layali asked excitedly.

“But we’re just friends,” A’liyah responded, turning away from her sister and reaching for one of the greenish-blue natural bathing sponges. She scrubbed the back of her neck and shoulders. “Can we take about something else?”

The younger Avanii rolled her eyes but nodded. “Sure. Tell me about what happened to you. Father mentioned that your group was convicted of crimes, and stranded on the south continent, of all places.”

“Yeah, it was a bit crazy. After my team and I first landed in our escape pods, we had no idea where we were. I eventually recognized the kavii’lor, and realized we were on Avaniia. I was happy to find that father had survived the crash along with some of the other members of the crew, including our doctor.

“We came across some humans who were there, illegally of course. They had managed to set up a hunting lodge in the sacred forest. They must have had some sort of prohibited jamming device that blocked our satellite surveillance.” A’liyah’s voice lined with disgust as she explained about the humans.

A look of shock seized Layali’s face. “Humans? Hunting? In the forbidden sacred forest?!”

“I know, I had the same reaction,” A’liyah said. “There was no way I was going to let them stay there. We took out their base and rescued some slaves they had there.”

“How did you take out their base?”

A’liyah shrugged nonchalantly. “We blew it up.”

Layali’s mouth dropped open in surprise. “How. . . . what. . . .?” She paused for a few moments to find some words to form a coherent sentence. “You survived a ship crash, fought with some humans, and then destroyed their base.” She shook her head. “I don’t know how you do what you do, sister. I could never be a marine.”

“All in a day’s work,” A’liyah stated, cleaning her feet. “And that’s not even the whole story.”

“What happened next?” Layali asked with rapt attention.

“Well, we knew we needed some evidence to clear our names of the criminal charges. The Excalibur’s A.I. core would have some recorded information about what happened before the ship crashed. Unfortunately, the Excalibur had crashed into a huge river when it hit Avaniia so the part of the ship we needed to get to was underwater by the time be found it.”

Layali looked skeptical. “An A.I. core?”

The LT sighed. “Yes, our ship was equipped with an A.I.”

“Very. But that A.I. might help us to absolve us of the accusations made against my team and I,” A’liyah explained. “But obtaining the A.I. from the Excalibur underwater was not as simple as we thought it might be.”

“Oh, tell me!” Layali said.

“Well, getting into the Excalibur was fairly easy, thanks to the equipment my teammate Jerex Proga saved from the crash. Once inside, we were separated, but managed to get the A.I. core out without too much trouble. As we went to leave the sunken ship, we were confronted by some aquatic creatures that were, well, let’s just say that they were not very friendly.”

The younger Avanii tilted her head to one side. “Oh?”
“Yeah, they tried to eat us,” A’liyah clarified.

“A tense underwater struggle ensued. Not sure if Proga was going to make it. But we fought them off and swam to the safety of the shore.”

“Does your life ever have a dull moment?” Layali questioned.

A’liyah smiled. “Not very many, it would seem.”

“Well, if you were all the way out in that forest, how did you get here?” Layali asked, indicating the family house.

“We had a communications relay that we were trying to set up and get working since the crash. We apparently needed to get to some higher group to set it up where the trees wouldn’t block the signal. We found some ancient ruins in forest that cleared the tree-line. The Commander and Proga set up the relay on top of it and connected to the family frequency.”

“Ancient ruins?” Layali repeated with curiosity.

A’liyah shrugged her shoulders in an effect to ward off a chill that the memory of those forest ruins thrust upon her. “Yeah, I don’t really know anything about them but I got a very strange feeling from that place. I think there’s a good reason that Avanii don’t live in that forest anymore.”

“Hmmm,” Layali commented, contemplating. She then shrugged away the thought smiled. “Hey, I think it’s almost time for dinner. You should get dressed. Let me help you pick something out! Something to impress the commander.”

The elder Avanii rolled her eyes with a sigh. So much for a long and peaceful bath. “Alright, alright,” she said, rising from the water and grabbing a nearby towel.

Way down in the Avanii river...

So far this season, our intrepid Drop Squad Alpha has met their new crewmate at the Ambassador’s Gala, investigated a distress call, survived a zombie apocalypse, got charged with criminal negligence and crashed on an unknown planet, stopped an illegal hunting operation, and retrieved the ship’s AI core from the bottom of a river.

I have been having what I believe are called dreams or maybe they’re called nightmares, I’m not sure, but I can’t remember them when I’m awake. I have decided to use a neural imager to capture these dreams/nightmares so that I can research them and better understand what I am experiencing.

Dream Sequence 1:

All I see is a bright light shining directly at me I hear muffled voices with no discernable direction I can’t feel anything or move my body at all.

“Sir I think the subject is concious.” One voice says

“Nonsense the subject is sedated and any mental stimulation would show up since we are directly connected to his $^&*%.”

What was that last part? Why do I feel so strange? Where am I? I hear foot steps somewhere and a new voice.

“Hows subject #^$&*! doing today?”

“The surgery was sucessful and we are seeing interesting side effects, so we may need to open him up again to see why these occurances are happening.”

“How long until he is combat ready?”

I can feel my heart start beating faster in my chest like a piston at the mention of those words, but I don’t know why, I move my eyes around but I can not see anything but the bright light.

“Sir the subject’s heart rate is spiking!”

I see a silouette stand infront of the light for a brief moment.

“There seems to be volentary eye movement.”

“Is the subject aware of our pressence?”

“No sir, but to be certain I’ll increase the sedative.”

I feel a strange sensation seem to flow into me as my eyelids become too heavy to keep up. Before I become consumed by the sensation I hear loud noises followed by two duller sounds.

“Well hopefully your next care takers are less incompetent.”

Dream Sequence 2:

I am in a strange room the walls are white, and I can’t see where the light is coming from. I’m sitting on the floor barely able to keep my eyes open for some strange reason. After some time I hear voices again, but clearer than before.

“Subject seems to have regained some self-consciousness after test number !$#$ whether this is a side-effect of the #$^% or his own personal will has yet to be determined.”

There is a low ringing sound, but I can’t tell from what direction.

“How did you get that device past security?”

“It was part of my contract to work with these people to always be reachable by the higher-ups. Yes sir?”

“How is our little experiment today?”

This new voice sounds odd some how. I can hear him…or maybe her, but I know something is wrong with the voice.

“The subject seems to be building a natural resistance to the drug we are using. I’m hesitant to increase the dosage for fear of having to start over from scratch again.”

“Doctor the subjects heart rate is slowly increasing.”

“That’s strange we haven’t introduced any stimuli yet today.”

“Doctor would you humor me for a moment, I have a theory I would like you to test for me.”

“I don’t see why you bother to ask sir, this is your project.”

“Excellent. Push the subject right now.”

I feel a strange sensation for a mo…Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgh. After some length of time I realize I’m laying on my side. I can’t see anything because all the light is gone only darkness surrounds me, but I can still hear those three voices.

“…Incredible sir, all the instruments we’re using to monitor the subject have overloaded even with all the protection. Your theory seems to be sound.”

“Wonderful, oh is your assistant there?”

“Yes sir.”

“Would you ask how her son is for me?”

“The director is asking how your son is? I didn’t know you had a son.”

“Oh…yes he is fine, but I prefer to keep my work and personal life separate.”

“She says he is fine. Is there anything else sir?”

“No, just good bye doctor.”

That loud noise again and that duller noise again.

“Are you there my dear?”

“Yes Director. Though the doctor has unfortunately committed suicide.”

There is a faint clicking noise.

“How unfortunate. It says here in his file he had a wife and child as well, do give them my condolences.”

Another faint clicking noise?

“Understood sir.”

Bullshit. This is a joke. A sick joke.
“Proga, got a new job for ya. You’ve been itching for some action, right?”
“Yeah boss, sounds good! Desk jobs SUCK!”

Less than 24 hours later, I’m branded as a traitor, shot out of a ship, and presumably all of my stuff is gone. Blown up on impact. The only way to find out for sure is to go look.
Now I’m stranded on planet clusterfuck which is apparently a prison or something. We’ve already been hunted once in the hour that we’ve been here.
At least these guys aren’t some snobby assholes. They enjoy the thrill of the fight.
And the woman… Lieutenant. She is something else. Born into a family of ambassadors, privileged more than most, yet she chooses the life of a warrior. Someone to hold in high regard. Commander has also earned himself a spot on my wall of approval. I suppose I’m in good company.
And the kid… He’s got good intentions, just some paranoia…. a lot. of paranoia. I haven’t had a sibling in…. practically ever. But I think I’m gonna be playing the big brother. I pretty much made a promise to myself to keep an eye out for him…. even if he doesn’t agree with the method at the time. (I know you read this, kid)

Hah. Chin up, soldier. Time to wade through the shit.

Lt. A'Liyah Kaelestis Personal Log

The Excalibur is gone. Crashed and burned on an unknown planet on which we are now stranded. That ship was pretty much my home for many years. Now it is no more. We saw some of the lifeboats jettison before it crashed, but I don’t know how many of the crew made it off. I don’t know if my father is alive. He was in the Excalibur’s infirmary when we had to abandon ship, trying to escape from being arrested. I guess we’re fugitives now, on the run with very little supplies. We have to try to clear our names of those false accusations that moron Van Sant declared on us. It is definitely going to be rough for awhile, but I’m sure Baldur and I can get through it. I don’t know how well the kid will fair, but I guess he’s been on the run before. I actually feel bad for the new guy, Proga. He just took this new job and everything goes to hell. Maybe once he gets over the fact that all his quartermaster inventory was destroyed in the crash he will be ok. Anyway, I think out first order of business should be getting out of this forest and finding some more supplies, but we must be cautious. . . . .

Jerex Proga Personal Log
First day on the job

So, this day happened….
First of all, Colonel is black. That’s pretty much all I have to say about that.
You probably don’t understand the level of black I’m talking about. He is the night. He is Justice. He is…. Sanders.
Anyways, got introduced to the crew. Definitely the kinda place I wanna be. Got the best of both worlds. Parties, potential nuclear crisis, and the commander has a sick ass gun. Like that thing is beautiful.
It was a pain in the ass to get all of my inventory transferred onto the ship, but a man is his business, right?
The lieutenant is…. wow. Yeah. she’s smokin’. Not sure about the whole alien thing… But I’m open to new things. haha.
Not quite sure where the Kid plays into all of this, but holy shit is he weird. I’m sticking to the safe side of keeping the peace between us, Cuz he doesn’t seem like the kinda person you want mad at you. Then shit just gets annoying. If there’s one thing I hate more, it’s having to go old-school after all your shit malfunctions. Can’t even count the assassinations involved where I got EMP’d and had to just kick ass and chew bubble gum… but for this one, I just gave him the gum.
(P.S. Met the chef in a closet. She has more than one gift, I can tell ya that)
-Shipping out to first mission, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Entry 73
I beat level 72 on Astral Alchemist Adventure today, but I gotta admit I was disapointed in the boss fight. I mean come on the code for the computer console to overload the Cyber Emperor U-02 was obviously 6592154892945637219-q only a Zeta level encryption is this a baby’s game? Though the fact that they gave him the conqueror cyclone and the cyclone gun was a bit of a surprise to me, but I still mounted them on my character after I defeated him. Also I found a really old hotel building to hide out in while I’m stuck here on the wastes. No new games anywhere in the building, but I was able to find an old radio antennae I may be able to get some use out of.

Entry 74
So I made it to level 93 on Mystery Lonebattler I am kinda feeling a connection with the main character. I mean he fights people that are chasing him around for some reason that he doesn’t know and well… Any way while I was getting ready to pick up where I last left off in my game some rude bounty hunters broke into my penthouse suite making a huge mess. Seriously what is with bounty hunters nowadays I mean really no manners. I mean here I am in a really nice suite which I paid… happened to get for free and they come in and trash it. Also one of them was extremely dim-witted and used a taser on me, I think it was the G-53 model by Anderson Alternative Technology they make good stuff, anyway either he didn’t know or was being just plain stupid.
When I was trying to checkout from the hotel more of these bounty hunter creeps tried to claim my bags. Luckly I had recently watched some cool historic documents showing how some people in the old days on Earth got around by running and jumping one of them was called District B-13. Anyway I eventually made it to my radio tower and was able to contact some people with the code name Drop Squad Alpha hopefully they won’t be just a bunch of complete n00bs.

Entry 75
Ok level 103 on Bloodstained Murderer, with Skin of Amethyst and the Obsidian Crossbow was beyond disturbing for me. The part with the metal pail and the twin girl jesters made me remove the cpu from my game station and re-install everything just to make sure the game was completely gone. I started traveling with DSA, it’s what I call Drop Squad Alpha, and I have to admit when I came to this world I thought I had gone to cyber hell. These people are kinda bizarre I don’t think I have ever met people that were so disconected from the net before.
First there is the commander, Kurtis Baldur I had to hack his power armor inorder to even get them to come and see me. The guy is your typical military soldier big guy carrying an even bigger gun, but I do hope I can get a chance to take apart his power armor never have worked on an antique. After him there is Knox this guy is also military or at least he is now he seems more like some of the people that have been chasing me around. He has this cybernetic arm that has to be a custom job because I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere on the net. I hope he’ll let me do a little tweaking with it some time, and maybe even if he doesn’t let me. Finally Lieutenant A’Liyah Kaelestis and her pet Ione, best I can tell she is Avan’ii other than that she doesn’t seem very interesting.

Entry 76
This new Extra-Dimensional Grid Sim game is pretty cool I like how the maker took into account for the quantum carbon distortion factor that comes with RNA gyrotransition and tachyon oscillation. I got to fly today thanks to some very cool high tech H-K driods which I happened to salvage after DSA destroyed most of them. Later some guy that Knox seemed to know called Nova tried to capture me and kill Knox, but it didn’t work out to well for him. After which some guy named Mick showed me an encrypted file and asked if I could un-encrypt it, which I had already done by the time he finished asking. Wut a n00b!

Entry 77
So I’ve beaten a number of games ever since leaving that wasteland of a planet with the Alpha Squad. Gauntlet of Annihilation was giving me a little trouble today while I hacked this A.I. at this boring political thing in order to save the people from Quantum Fizz. Apparently people get a little upset when you “possibly” declare a possible nuclear attack at a major political gathering. Baldur seemed upset over the ordeal, and for some reason thought I was responsible. He broke my game, so I calmly and rationally explained as to why he should never do that again. They put me in a white plastic cell with no electronics and fitted me with a neural disrupter for some strange reason. When they finally released me I started scavenging parts for my new game system and happened to run into a new member of Alpha Squad he gave me gum. The Excalibur was really friendly we had a great conversation about interplanetary travel and how she wished her engines were calibrated differently so she wouldn’t feel like she was slowing down in her golden years.
